For blacks, mix of 'Help' emotions on Oscar night

Despite torrents of debate among African-Americans over the merits of the segregation-era movie "The Help," most still hoped that Viola Davis, who plays a maid, would become just the second black winner of the best actress Oscar.
And so there was widespread disappointment when Davis lost the Academy Award to Meryl Streep on Sunday night. Still, ambivalence tinged the reaction: Besides regret that the ranks of black Oscar winners remained small, many felt relief that a role viewed as stereotypical was not honored.
"Oohhhhhhhnnnnnnooooooooooooooo," wailed Robinne Lee on Twitter.
Lee, a black actress who has appeared in films such as "Seven Pounds" and "Hotel for Dogs," said in an interview that Streep embodies excellence and deserved to win. "But Viola had so much hype this year, and there was so much excitement, and it conjured up so much controversy in the black community about this role . so (the loss) was disappointing."
Yet Lee felt a mix of emotions, since she is eager to see more diverse movie casts in a wider variety of roles. Adding to the conundrum was the best supporting actress victory of Octavia Spencer, who played another maid in "The Help."
Prior to Sunday, only 13 black actors had won Hollywood's highest honor in the Oscars' 84-year history. Only Halle Berry had been chosen best actress, for playing a wounded soul who finds solace in the arms of a white man in "Monster's Ball."
In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Oscar, for a supporting role as a maid called Mammy in the Dixie-glorifying "Gone With the Wind." Since then, a high percentage of black Oscar nominees and winners have played characters such as slaves, African despots, welfare recipients, dysfunctional mothers, drug-addicted musicians or drug-dealing cops.
With Spencer's award, maid roles are responsible for two of the six Oscars won by black actresses. Streep, meanwhile, earned the third Oscar of her transcendent career for playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Which made Lee wonder: "How inspiring would it be if we could be nominated in roles where we are playing kings, queens, politicians, writers, artists, dancers . we could soar."
The debate over "The Help" made Hollywood's racial issues a recurring theme of Oscar night.
During a skit about what actors were thinking, host Billy Crystal imagined this for Davis: "I want to thank my writer and director for creating the role of a strong black woman that wasn't played by Tyler Perry." He also quipped: "When I came out of 'The Help' I wanted to hug the first black woman that I saw, which from Beverly Hills is a 45-minute drive."
Presenting an animation award, Chris Rock said the voice genre allowed fat women to play skinny or a wimp to play a gladiator. "And if you're a black man, you can play a donkey or a zebra. You can't play white, oh my God!"
Rock's observation resonated with Monika Brooks, a diversity consultant and self-described "movie dork."
"The problem is not that Davis played a maid," she said. "The problem is there's not more black people in really good roles."
Few, if any, black Hollywood executives have the power to "green-light" a film for production. Of the 5,765 people who vote on the Oscars, nearly 94 percent are white and 77 percent are male, according to a new Los Angeles Times study. The median voter age is 62.
That's why Brooks was not surprised by "The Help" being made or crestfallen when Davis didn't win: "Whoever writes the checks writes the rules."
As the Oscars approached, "The Help" was lambasted in some quarters of the black community. Many perceived it as another instance of black characters being "saved" by whites, or of serving only as vehicles to improve and enlighten white lives.
"Think of Will Smith in 'The Legend of Bagger Vance,' Michael Clarke Duncan in 'The Green Mile,' Anthony Mackie in 'The Adjustment Bureau' and Sir Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus in 'The Matrix,'" said Tour?, the cultural commentator who uses just one name, writing in Time.
Wrote the screenwriter and author James McBride: "It's the same old story: Nothing in this world happens unless white folks says it happens."
Watching "The Help" was torture for Tour?. But as a black man, he was disappointed that Davis lost.
"I hated the film but respect Viola's immense talent," he said in an interview. "I wanted her to get recognition for her talent and to get the power that comes with winning."
The Oakland activist and journalist Davey D said it seemed like a contradiction for critics to slam the film but support Davis and Spencer.
"Y'all should be happy the maid flick didn't win," he tweeted. It was nominated for best picture, but lost to "The Artist."
"The fear was Viola winning or 'The Help' winning would've validated keeping alive an image that many black folks found stereotypical, inaccurate and overall problematic," he said in an interview. "A win was seen as a setback."
Not for Barbara Young, who has worked for 17 years as a domestic worker and is an organizer for the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Watching the film, Young cried when Davis' character was separated from a white child ? she had endured several such partings in real life.
Young traveled from New York to Los Angeles for an Oscar viewing party organized by the National Domestic Workers Alliance. When Streep's name was called instead of Davis', the room of 50 people let out a huge groan.
"It was a very sad situation in that room," said Young, an immigrant from Barbados. "I was disappointed, but I was very grateful to the producers of the movie for bringing domestic work to the forefront."
She saw a simple reason for the criticism of the maid role: "It's not recognized as real work."
Davis certainly knows that it's real work ? her mother and grandmother both toiled as maids.
During Oscar season, Davis consistently advocated for a wider range of black roles. "I've played a lot of drug addicts," she said in an interview with Terry Gross of NPR.
And she told Tavis Smiley that black people who are ambivalent about "The Help" have a mindset that is "absolutely destroying the black artist," because it forces black actors to water down their performances ? to avoid character flaws that might offend oversensitive black audiences.
"The black artist cannot live in the place ? in a revisionist place," Davis told Smiley. "The black artist can only tell the truth about humanity, and humanity is messy."

Easy and Useful Macro: Right Fit Worksheet ? Business ...
If you?ve never created a Macro before, this one will be an easy starting place. A macro can be a simple recording of keystrokes that can be played back over and over again. The purpose of this macro is to set the column widths and row heights to the right size to accommodate the data their holding. Start with a worksheet where you?ve narrowed a few columns enough to show # signs in the cells. You may also want to select a few rows and make them either too wide or too narrow.

- Start on the View tab, in the Macro group and click the Macro button.
- Select Record Macro Name it something easy, such as ?RightFitSheet?.
- Assign it a keyboard shortcut using your Shift key and a letter, like R for right fit. This way the shortcut will be Ctrl+Shift+R.
- Change the ?Store macro in?? field to Personal Macro Workbook. This way you can use it on any workbook.

- When you click OK, you will be recording your keystrokes. It?s always a good idea to take your hands off of keyboard and mouse at this point. You will want to be very intentional about what you do next.
- Select the cornerstone on the worksheet to select all cells (Ctrl+A twice works well, too). Be sure that all cells remain selected during the next two steps.
- Double-click between two column headers. Be sure your cursor is positioned between the two letters and appears as a horizontal double arrow.
- Now, double-click between two row headers. Be sure your cursor is positioned between the two numbers and appears as a vertical double arrow.
Right size columns and rows
- Press Ctrl+Home to place your cursor in cell A1. This step is optional, but it?s always good to know where your cursor is going to end up when your macro completes.
Now reduce the column and row sizes again and try the shortcut you created (Ctrl+Shift+R)!

Earlier this week?Nielsen?released a study that found just about a third of?smartphone users turn to their device for shopping-related activities. The study, conducted during the third quarter of 2011, gives a good picture of how we?re using smartphones in stores. One thing the study highlights is that while not everyone is using their phone in this way, many more would like to.
Below I?ve combined Nielsen?s results with a primer on how you can get in on the trend of being a savvy shopper with your iPhone specifically using apps that are available in Apple?s Apple Store.
38 percent are comparison pricing aka ?showrooming?
Nielsen found that 38 percent of survey respondents use their smartphone for comparison shopping while in a physical store. This is encouraged by online retailers, and last holiday season Amazon gave a 5 percent discount on certain products to users who scanned retail items using the Amazon app. Big box stores like Target are annoyed by this new trend, however ? so much so that they are asking manufacturers to modify their product offerings to prevent comparison shopping.
As a consumer, I love the ability to find the best price for an item so long as I am willing to wait for it to ship. As a small business owner who works with other small businesses, I see this as driving revenue away from our local communities and hurting the local tax base. I try to shop local when possible, but to me, I see a big box ?brick and mortar? and an online retailer as synonymous. When the bargain is good enough, it?s hard to resist.
If you want to get in the middle of this war between physical and online retailers, some of the top apps for comparison shopping are RedLaser, ShopSavvy, Google Shopper and Amazon?s Price Check. Both Red Laser and ShopSavvy also allow you to find an item locally, but ShopSavvy and Google Shopper provide reviews ? which are the next most popular shopping-related activity we do with our phones. If you search online, you might want to stay away from the in-store Wi-Fi as it can show different prices since you could be redirected to an ?internal? version of the website with slightly different pricing or be blocked entirely from a competitor. Use your 3G signal to play it safe and make sure your surfing isn?t being intercepted.

For more in-depth research, I found the Consumer Reports App lacking, and I prefer to access their website, which requires a separate paid subscription from the magazine (a discount is given to current print subscribers). Many of us like to know what the crowd thinks of a product rather than trusting a salesperson (after all, it?s in the job title to sell us something). Mobile phones are ideal for this, and 32 percent of us use our phones for product review research. Google Shopper and Amazon?s Mobile App make it easy to find what others have to say about millions of products. Amazon carries practically everything, so it?s the place I start for online reviews.
24 percent are searching for and using online coupons
We all want to save money, so why not use your iPhone? The king of coupons is Grocery iQ, owned by Coupons.com. If you regularly shop at a grocery store or other retailer, be sure to install their app as they often offer coupons or special sales directly via their app. Don?t assume coupons are just for the big retailers. Individual stores often have their own apps featuring coupons. Even groups like AAA offer discounts.
A hidden place for coupons and direct savings is check-ins via foursquare or Facebook. In particular, American Express has a program in which you check in via FourSquare to both small businesses and national chains to receive a discount. I use this quite often and can tell you it works. I get free cupcakes at my locally owned Cupcake Construction Company as well as national retailers like Whole Foods. If available in your area and where you shop, Shopkick is a great way to earn rewards and discounts.
22 percent are purchasing products
Whether it?s because the store is out of stock or the pricing is better online, shopping on your phone is fun and easy. It gives you instant gratification. A friend suggests a book to you at the coffee shop, you buy it right then and there. Your spouse tells you that the water filter needs replacing while you are waiting for a table at the restaurant. Bam. Problem solved. But considering this usefulness, this number is still rather low ? 0nly 22 percent of the people who are using phones for shopping are actually making purchases.
What?s interesting to note is how this behavior changes when we?re talking about shopping on a tablet. Tablet shoppers are three times more likely to purchase an item compared to smartphone users, and they spend more, according to a recent study?by Adobe.
A caution while shopping via a mobile device: because public Wi-Fi is unprotected, I use 3G while making purchases so nothing is intercepted. I?m also careful of prying eyes when pulling out my credit card. To get an additional savings boost, use sites like dealnews.com?and FatWallet to find discount codes and earn cash back for your online purchases.
18 percent are using location-based services to find a retail location
?Yes, we have no bananas? is a fun song, but a lousy thing for a clerk to say when you need bananas. Instead, by using Google Shopper or one of the other purchasing apps mentioned at the beginning of the article, you might be able to find the product locally or find other retailers that have it.
9 percent are paying via smartphone ? but 71 percent are?interested in paying via smartphone
Talk about a missed opportunity, in particular for the brick-and-mortars losing out to online retailers. NFC (near-field communications) has been discussed for a while for the iPhone, and Ryan Kim believes Apple could take the lead on this in the U.S. Meanwhile, Kevin Tofel is already using his Google Wallet and his Galaxy Nexus.
The closest thing we have currently to NFC on the iPhone is the Square Card Case, which merchants can use for seamless transactions via an app. I tried it out this weekend in St. Louis, and it really was a blast to say ?put it on my tab!? The app uses your GPS location and the location of the merchant, and when you are close enough, it notifies the merchant of your presence. The only caveat is that the merchant must use Square?s popular credit card processing system.
So while we?re making progress in what kinds of activities we?ll do with our phones, we?re still a ways off from mainstream acceptance of the phone as a shopping tool and a payment tool. When you think about it, it?s odd that we fancy up our phones with fun cases and apps, but then we use our credit card the same way we always have since the 1950s. The Square experience comes close to modernizing this process ? every merchant I know who uses Square, including myself, sees the giggles of glee and fascination when customers sign with their finger and have a receipt texted to them.

My 10 Freelance Design Business Goals + Tips for Setting Yours ...

I hope you?re not tired of hearing about my freelance business just yet because today I?m going to share with you not only my first 10 business goals for Greer Genius, but also tips for how to develop and set your own freelance design business goals.
By now I?m sure you know that I purchased Preston?s ebook, From Passion to Profit, shortly after it was published in 2011.
The first chapter talks about setting business goals, but I wasn?t sure exactly what type of goals I needed to set, so I first thought about the criteria involved in setting good, attainable, measurable business (not design) goals.
Below, you?ll find my goal-setting criteria. If you have anything to add, please leave a comment!
My Goal-Setting Criteria
Be specific. Goals need to be specific so that you know when you?ve achieved them ? and so that you can?t cut corners.
How do you measure ?doing well? or ?a lot of business??
I knew my goals had to have specific, measurable details so that I could check them off (and set new goals!).
A healthy mix of short-term, long-term and ongoing. If I only set long-term goals, it?s easy for me to get discouraged.
If I only set short-term goals, I?m not really thinking far enough ahead to sustain a business.
Some people stop there, but I wanted ongoing goals too: something that could never really be checked off, but that would be a timeless bar of achievement I?ve set for my business now and in the future.
If I really want Greer Genius to be successful 5-10 years (and more!) down the road, I?d better start thinking now about how to get there, and how to stay on track when the going gets hectic.
Fulfill the following categories
- Income Level: I have a standard of living I?d like to continue to pursue, and I need income to be able to sustain that lifestyle (I promise you, it?s not extravagant.).
I needed to determine what ?successful? meant to me right now in terms of dollars.
- Acquiring New Business: I can?t grow my business without new clients, so I knew some of my goals needed to pertain to finding them.
- Organization: I hate (HATE!) being the designer that is always behind, that others are always waiting on, that has to push back the deadline, that isn?t prepared.
Whether its on client projects or my own internal administration, I?ve worked for two companies that operated on a last-minute (and subsequently high-stress) policy daily, and Greer Genius, to the best of my ability, isn?t going to operate like that.
I needed some goals to quantify exactly how I am going to stay organized.
- Good Business Policies: It sounds silly that I?d need a goal to prevent me from doing something I know isn?t a good idea, but how many times do you eat a third cookie when you know you shouldn?t?
I needed a goal that locked me into never, not even once, letting good business practices slide.
- Paying it Forward: No man is an island, and neither is a business. If you want your community to support you, you must support your community.
I wanted at least one goal related to doing good for a cause, non-profit, or organization I believe in.
Be a little scary.
Yep, that?s right.
I wanted to write some goals that I was afraid might be a little bit far-fetched and out of reach. My goals can?t be too easy or I?ll never push myself to find that source of passive income, start up a blog, write an ebook, or learn how to program mobile apps.
Then I got to work.
Armed with my criteria, I sat down with my archaic tools ? a pen and a notebook ? and developed my goals for Greer Genius.
My 10 Business Goals for Greer Genius
- I will make $50,000 gross income in one year. (Long-term)
- No one client of mine will make up more than 20% of my income. (Ongoing)
- I will spend at least 12 hours a week marketing my business. (Ongoing)
- Originally, I started with 5 hours as a short-term goal. After talking with my business consultant and easily meeting this quota, I set a new goal. (You should really look into getting a mentor too.)

As you can see, I like ongoing goals.
Ones that I can continually measure Greer Genius against to see if I measure up to the standards I?ve set for my business.
These also function similar to short-term goals in that I follow many of them on a daily or weekly basis.
Also, I felt that these goals met my criteria. Number 7 probably ought to be 7a and 7b, so I cheated a little and shimmied two goals together.
