Belfast cops nab burglar caught in door letterbox

(AP) ? Police say it wasn't too hard to nab one would-be Belfast burglar ? he managed to get his arm stuck while trying to reach through a front door letterbox.

Northern Ireland police say a passing patrol spotted the 17-year-old wrestling to free himself from a house's front door before sunrise Thursday. They say he had tried to reach the door's inner lock via the letterbox flap but his arm became hopelessly trapped.

Firefighters dismantled the door but left the letterbox clamped to the boy's arm until they reached a police station, where it was safely removed.

Police declined to identify the boy because he has yet to be charged.

What's the Point of the World's First Biodegradable Joint Implant? [Science]

Think of joint implants, and you probably picture hard-wearing structures made of titanium designed to last for decades. Now a new joint implant has been launched which is biodegradable—but what's the point? More »

Oxygen detected in atmosphere of Saturn's moon Dione: Discovery could mean ingredients for life are abundant on icy space bodies

ScienceDaily (Mar. 2, 2012) ? Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists and an international research team have announced discovery of molecular oxygen ions (O2+) in the upper-most atmosphere of Dione, one of the 62 known moons orbiting the ringed planet. The research appeared recently in Geophysical Research Letters and was made possible via instruments aboard NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which was launched in 1997.

Dione -- discovered in 1684 by astronomer Giovanni Cassini (after whom the spacecraft was named) -- orbits Saturn at roughly the same distance as our own moon orbits Earth. The tiny moon is a mere 700 miles wide and appears to be a thick, pockmarked layer of water ice surrounding a smaller rock core. As it orbits Saturn every 2.7 days, Dione is bombarded by charged particles (ions) emanating from Saturn's very strong magnetosphere. These ions slam into the surface of Dione, displacing molecular oxygen ions into Dione's thin atmosphere through a process called sputtering.

Molecular oxygen ions are then stripped from Dione's exosphere by Saturn's strong magnetosphere.

A sensor aboard the Cassini spacecraft called the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) detected the oxygen ions in Dione's wake during a flyby of the moon in 2010. Los Alamos researchers Robert Tokar and Michelle Thomsen noted the presence of the oxygen ions.

"The concentration of oxygen in Dione's atmosphere is roughly similar to what you would find in Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of about 300 miles," Tokar said. "It's not enough to sustain life, but -- together with similar observations of other moons around Saturn and Jupiter -- these are definitive examples of a process by which a lot of oxygen can be produced in icy celestial bodies that are bombarded by charged particles or photons from the Sun or whatever light source happens to be nearby."

Perhaps even more exciting is the possibility that on a moon with subsurface water, such as Jupiter's moon Europa, molecular oxygen could combine with carbon in subsurface lakes to form the building blocks of life. Future missions to Europa could help unravel questions about that moon's habitability.

Two sensors aboard Cassini built by Los Alamos National Laboratory are expected to come into play beginning later this month, and again in April and May, when the Cassini spacecraft flies by the moon Enceladus. The moon is one of the brightest objects in our solar system, reflecting back nearly all of the sunlight that strikes it, thanks to a shimmering surface of snowy ice crystals. The moon also unleashes plumes ofmaterial from its south polar region. Los Alamos' ion-beam spectrometer and ion-mass spectrometer may help answer key questions about the composition of these plumes.

A giant among moths

ATLAS moths (Attacus atlas) are giants of the insect world. They are the largest moths known to exist, with a 25-centimetre wingspan. A common sight in south Asia, they can be found from India all the way to Papua New Guinea.

Photographer Sandesh Kadur spotted this beauty on a trip to document the biodiversity of the eastern Himalayas. Early one morning he was driving through Arunachal Pradesh in the far north-east of India, when he rounded a bend in the road and saw "a ginormous moth" sitting by a pothole.

He got out to take photos, and as he did so the moth went into a defensive posture, spreading its wings and leaning forward to make itself look as big as possible. It remained still for several minutes, so one of Kadur's colleagues was able to step behind it; the moth's wingspan was wider than his face.

As well as the moth's intimidating size, the striking patterns on its wings may also ward off predators. Venomous animals like wasps and poison frogs use similar colours to deter animals. In fact, in China the atlas moth is known as the snake's head moth, because the patterns on the tips of its wings look slightly like the heads of snakes.

Kadur eventually decided that the moth wasn't safe sitting in the road, so he manoeuvred it to the side. Some people are scared of moths but these monsters only live for a couple of weeks as adults and don't eat at all. All their feeding is done during a voracious larval stage when they go from egg to pupa in just four to six weeks - these are very hungry caterpillars indeed.

Economic Activity in the U.S. Increases for Fourth ... - Bankruptcy

A mysterious but important economic indicator increased in January for the fourth straight month, adding fuel to the claims of some analysts that the economy is slowly, but steadily, getting back into shape.

Last week, the Conference Board said that its index of important economic indicators rose 0.4 percent last month, pushing the index to its loftiest position since the summer of 2008, right before the economic crash.

The steady improvement has led to a slight decrease in the number of people filing for bankruptcy, but some experts caution that rising levels of consumer debt portend an eventual uptick in bankruptcy filings.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, the Conference Board?s announcement was good news for an ailing economy:

  • Measuring method. These ?leading indicators? measured by the Conference Board include a wide range of obscure financial factors, and are designed to predict economic conditions three to six months in the future. According to Ken Goldstein, a Conference Board economist, the recent data ?reflect an economy that started that year on a positive note.?
  • Actual indicators. Sources indicate that the indicators that all experienced a strengthening during the latest measuring cycle included: a credit index, building permits, average factor hours worked per week, the spread in interest rates, stock prices, and two different calculations of manufactured goods. The spread between short-term and long-term interest rates was the most promising of all the indicators. The largest negative indicator, though, was consumer confidence, which experienced a notable drop.
  • Unemployment rate drops. In addition to the improvement in the indicators listed above, the Los Angeles Times also observes that the unemployment rate took a promising dip to 8.3 percent, which is its lowest position in three years. This represents the addition of 243,000 net jobs to the American economy.
  • Other good news. Moreover, total car sales are on the rise, factories are producing goods at an increasingly swift clip, and total applications for unemployment aid are on the decline, although this may be partially attributable to the decision made by some Americans to simply drop out of the job market altogether.

So, the economic news is fairly promising. Consumers, however, have begun racking up high levels of debt, particularly in credit cards.

Increasing use of credit by consumers is good news for some businesses, but bad news for many individual consumers.

Fortunately, though, Chapter 7 bankruptcy offers an opportunity for consumers to try to shed some or all of their unsecured debts. For more information about the potential benefits of Chapter 7, contact a local bankruptcy lawyer today.
